LO3 - Task 4: My Role

A) I undertook the role of a camera man in making a trailer for a made up film that my group had to create whilst doing a college course. I had to undertake different instructions to be able to do what I needed to do. For example use a variety of skills to get different angles and shots to make the final outcome look professional. evidence for my work can be found at "http://jakemcleanunit46.blogspot.co.uk"

B) Some additional tasks that I had to do in the production of this project was shot plans and story boarding, so I had to film different shots and angles but I also had to plan them and think about when they could be used during the filming. I had to use my own initiative to think of how each shot could be used and what it could mean. For example if a scene was filmed with a different shot each time it could give off different meanings so I had to decide which shot and angle goes where to have to project represent what we want it too. Shot plans and story boarding can be seen at "http://jakemcleanunit46.blogspot.co.uk"

C) I think that I contributed to the project well because from previous work on filming I believe that I brought my knowledge of filming to the group and made a difference when looking into and working on the shots and angles we used throughout the project. The different shots and angles can be seen at "http://jakemcleanunit46.blogspot.co.uk"

Underneath are some examples of the story boarding and shot plans that me and another team member worked on in pre production to plan out how we want the film to look and seem. There is also a print screen of editing showing that i contributed towards the editing side of the production. I feel as if my kownledge of camera shots and angles helped a lot when we were making these plans.

LO2 - Task 3: Analysing My Own Skills

A) My written skills are limited due to me not taking any English qualifications further than GCSE but I enjoy writing and I think I have a creative mind so i am able to keep writing and come up with new ideas. However I do have experience in script writing from doing previous projects in my collage course, as well as a lot of experience with Microsoft Office which would make a difference when being the director of a film due to me being able to use the equipment well and keep everything organised.

B)  In my verbal communication I feel as if my verbal skills are much better than my writing skills, I see that as an advantage when looking a a specific job role such as a director, for example I am able to communicate with people doing other roles throughout the project as well as give professional directions and instructions to each of the team throughout the project.

C)  in my practical production, Looking into my practical skills, i think that they go well with the 2 jobs roles I am looking at. My practical skills include being able to use a camera and have the knowledge and skill to have a good professional outcome. I also can be very organised when it comes to making sure everything is done and clear before starting project in pre production, such as all the planning documents and safety regulations as well as making sure everything is suitable and complete in post production.

D) Looking into my creativity, I think that I am very creative and can come up with a lot of professional ideas which would benefit me a lot when looking into both of these roles. For example having good ideas on how to film or having an actor act in a certain way. Or being the director and getting involved with set design and the creative ideas. As well as being the camera operator and being able to film in different creative ways to produce a professional final outcome.

E) I think that I could improve on my written communication because when looking into being a director you need to be involved in all parts of the production stages, for example in pre production to be a director you need to be involved with everything such as the set designs, locations reccee, risk assessments and production plans so if i improved my writing skills i feel that it would benefit me more in the paper work of the production because i could put a lot more detail into it. I could also improve my verbal communication skills so other people in other roles of the project know exactly what they are doing if I could describe the task better.

F) Looking into the gap in my skills I am going to try and work on more projects to keep practising the things I am not good at. For example get more involved in the pre production when next taking the director role. As well as trying different things and ideas so I could practise explaining them to other people in the team.

LO1 - Task 2: 2 Job Roles

A)

1. A film director is a person that is in charge of the whole project when making a film, for example where the cameras go, what angles and shots they are doing, what music is used with in the film and when and where, how the set looks and how the film is edited. He is involved in every part of the production from the preproduction when the planning of everything takes place to the post production when the full thing is put together in editing.

2. A camera operator is someone that is in control of the camera and films the content of what is being done. For example they could be filming the news or filming something live like an event or  filming something like a documentary, or something such as a TV show or a film. The Camera operator has responsibilities to able to take orders and have the skills to be able to do what is asked. For example be able to keep the camera on the subject and have to know knowledge of filming such as camera angles, shots and movements. If he or she can not do these things then outcome will not be what the director wants. The camera operator is only involved in the production stage of the production, there is no need for him/her to be in pre production because the directer/writer/producer will plan the shots and angles. And no need to be in the post production because the editor is responsible for putting the footage together.

B)

1. The director would not need any equipment that would be used in any of the stages in production for example he/she would not need a camera or a computer or a microphone or any software. The directer would need equipment to communicate with the people he/she is responsible for. For example communicating with the camera operator is he/she is to far away in a large landscape scenario.

2. The camera operator obviously uses a camera as part of there equipment but if he/she was filming something far away from the director for example a set outside in a desert for example, he/she would have a headset so they could communicate with the director and take instructions without being disruptive to everything else going on.

C)

1. The skills you need to be a directer are that you would need to be a director is to be organised, in control and demanding because you need to tell someone if they are doing something wrong, how to do it right. Its also on your shoulders if something goes wrong or if someone hasn't turned up and you need to be calm and in control to fix the problem. We have had different inputs from different employers such as Warp studios and Sheffield Live TV, working with these people we have had to work towards a deadline and manage everything that we are doing in the project, as well as working with in a brief that we have been given and making sure it is suitable for it to be aired. which have made us develop the skills you need to be a director.

2. The skills that you need to carry out this role is you need to know how to use and move a camera in a professional way and have knowledge of what you need to do for example, angles, shots and movements. The input from Sheffield Live TV and Warp Studios have also made us develop our skills that we would need to be a camera operator. Such as filming a short trailer for a film and a TV show that contains a lot of different camera shots, movements and angles.

D) Compare the contributions and responsibilities of each to the production.

The film director has a large contribution to the production because with out someone in charge the whole thing would be unsuccessful for example know one would have a way forward or know where to go or what to do and if the project managed to be finished it would not be produced as well as it could of been with a lead director. The Director is one of the top most important roles with in the industry. Whilst the camera operator has responsibilities to able to take orders and have the skills to be able to do what is asked. For example be able to keep the camera on the subject and have to know knowledge of filming such as camera angles, shots and movements. The director is in charge of he camera operators so he/she is not dealing with as many responsibilities as the director, he/she just needs to know how to use an camera and listen to instructions. this role is a lot smaller than the other i have looked at because this role requires attention to one thing whilst a director is in charge and responsible for multiple things. The Directer is also involved with all the parts of the production from pre pre production to post production but the camera operator is only involved with the production such as recording the footage.

LO1 - Task 1: Job Roles Mind Map

Responsibilities

Directer - The directer controls the full project, he/she makes the decisions of what is filmed when it is filmed how it is filmed, The Directer is involved in all parts of the production from pre production to post production, they are responsible to be involved every thing that goes on from the planning of the set design and the story boarding to how it is edited which includes filters, colours used in the video, music, sound effects and everything else.

Producer - The role of a producer is very similar to the role of a directer because he/she will also be involved with everything that goes on in all aspects of the production of the final piece. But the Producer is more of the overseer of the production whilst the directer is more of the main role who would take change and make decisions if needs be.

Editor - The editor of the project is responsible for putting everything together in post production after everything has been recorded in production, such as the songs and sound effects that have been made and the filming of the piece they are trying to put together. The editor is only in post production and is not needed in any other stages.

Writer - The writer is opposite to the Editor, he/she is at the start of the pre production that would come up with all the ideas and is responsible for writing everything such as the screen play and script. The writer thinks of the ideas, then passes it to the people that will record it in production and then onto the people in pro production to put it all together.

Sound - There are different people that are involved with the sound of the Project, for example the sound engineer is involved in production and post production to monitor all the sound and to work with it in production and also in post production working on all the audio recorded as well as all the songs and sound effects so they are ready for the editor to put them into the final piece.

Designers - There are also different people involved with Designing for example set design or costume design or designs for props used in the project. All of the Designing aspects of the project would take place in pre production because everything has to be planned and ready or when it will be in use in production.

Cameramen - The people filming will only be involved in the production stage, this is because they do not need to plan anything and they will not need to do anything to the footage after it has been recorded and passed onto post production. The Writer, Directer and Producer will have all the shots and style of filming planned and ready to tell the Cameramen from pre production and then the Editor will be ready to take the footage after it has been filmed in Production.
